Barb Maiberger, MA, LPC - Maiberger InstituteBarb Maiberger, MA, LPC is the founder of the Maiberger Institute, and the author of “Remote Together: A Therapist’s Guide to Cultivating a Sustainable Practice,”EMDR Essentials: A Guide for Clients and Therapists” and the co-auther of “EMDR Therapy and Somatic Psychology: Interventions to Enhance Embodiment in Trauma Treatment.” Barb Maiberger is an EMDR Trainers and Consultant, and is the CE Program Administrator for the Maiberger Institute. Barb’s knowledge, experience, keen sense of empathy, and a strong presence have motivated over a thousand therapists to incorporate EMDR therapy into their practices.

Barb has an undergraduate degree in dance (BFA in Dance from Ohio State University, 1983), went on to become a massage therapist (Swedish Institute in New York, 1989) and then received a Masters in Somatic Psychology (Naropa University, 1998). She is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Colorado since 2001. Barb has been a teacher over 30 years; teaching dance, massage, somatic psychology, and now EMDR therapy.

Barb’s interest in psychology developed during her massage years, when she witnessed people experiencing trauma responses during the massage. Feeling ill equipped to handle such responses, she went on to study Somatic Psychology, where she could bring her movement background and massage knowledge into the field of psychotherapy.

While studying for her Masters, Barb heard a lecture by Bessel van der Kolk, a world-renowned expert on the treatment of trauma. He spoke about EMDR therapy and it’s ability to help people heal from traumatic events. Barb was focused on becoming an expert in trauma but felt skeptical of what he presented because other therapists she knew and respected were giving EMDR therapy a negative review.

Several years later a colleague of Barb’s was studying EMDR therapy and offered Barb a practice session of EMDR. Barb was so fascinated with what she had experienced that she immediately went out and received training in EMDR therapy. She realized that EMDR therapy was an integrative therapy that was body centered and would integrate easily into her practice.

Since completing her EMDR Training in 2001, she went on to assist Molly Gierasch, PhD, in teaching EMDR Therapy in Boulder, CO from 2003 to 2008. Barb became an EMDRIA Approved Consultant in 2006 and then started teaching EMDR therapy in 2008. In 2009, Barb created the Maiberger Institute to offer EMDR Trainings and Somatic EMDR Workshops as an EMDRIA approved provider. In 2021, the Maiberger Institute chose to no longer be affiliated with EMDRIA. Currently, the Maiberger Institute is continuing its mission to provide safe and professional Remote EMDR Trainings, and also offers a EMDR Certification Program and EMDR Consultations.

Barb brings her somatic background into all of her trainings. she has personally conducted over a hundred EMDR training program, and personally trained thousands of clinicians to integrate EMDR therapy into their practice.  She is passionate about EMDR therapy and believes every therapist needs to be trained in this psychotherapeutic modality. Her mission is to give the gift of EMDR therapy to as many therapists as she can. She believes that learning how to work with trauma is essential for every therapists practice. Seeing therapists excited about their work, and encouraged that they can help their clients really feel change, motivates Barb to continue teaching everyday.
